2017 - SPONSORSHIP OF DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN
In late 2017 Wantirna Lions will sponsor a number of disadvantaged children across Victoria. This program is run by the Smith Family organisation and was created to allow disadvantaged children to gain sponsorship for essential items such as school uniforms, footwear, text books and the ability to participate in school excursions. In addtion to this, the program also provides counselling services to teh children and their families as needed.
This is a wonderful program and one that we as a club are priviledged to get on board with.
2017 - NANCY BARNETT FOUNDATION
Late in 2017 Wantirna Lions in conjunction with Templeton Primary School agreed a multi-year sponsorhsip program whereby Wantirna Lions would provide annual financial sponsorship for two students at the school.
The sponsorship is to take the description of the Nancy Barnett Foundation. Nancy was a very active member of the Lions family up until her passing in February 2017. This Foundation is a means by which the club
can honour her memory, recognise her contribution to the community, and provide future support in one of the areas she was passionate about - Youth.
MIDNIGHT BASKETBALL - 2016 - April to June
Wantirna Lions is proud to support Midnight Basketball Australia. A great Youth initiative.
Midnight Basketball Australia is a harm prevention charity that runs a national social inclusion programme to protect 'at risk' youth from harm and help identify and embrace positive opportunities.
Dinner, compulsory life skills workshops and tournament basketball games are run in stadiums on Friday or Saturday nights from 7.30pm till midnight, followed by a bus home, providing a safe and motivating environment.
Our first Midnight Basketball program was in Redfern Sydney in 2007 and due to its success the program now runs across the country.
Midnight Basketball is open to youth aged 12 to 18 years.
In keeping with our motto NoWorkshop NoJumpshot® players must attend the workshop in order to play basketball. We applaud loud and hard our Midnight Basketballers’ commitment to voluntarily participating in the whole program, including the workshops.
